2003年に乳がんで亡くなられたカナダの有名作家キャロル・シールズ。長年にわたって友人Blanche Howardと文通をしていたそうだ。そのふたりの往復書簡集が発刊された。A Memoir of Friendship: The Letters between Carol Shields & Blanche Howard。
この中で、シールズがモンゴメリのことに触れているらしい。オタワ・シティズン紙のS.F. Posesorskiによる記事（5月6日、日曜掲載）”Dear Carol, Letters between authors Blanche Howard and Carol Shields offer a revealing record of their 30-year friendship”によると、モンゴメリの日誌を読んだキャロルは、友人に宛てた手紙でこう書いている：
“I felt I was inside that woman’s head, wonderful. Also sad.”
キャロル・シールズは、モンゴメリのよき理解者でありえたことであろう。同時代に生きていたら、ふたりは腹心の友になりえたかもしれない、なんて思うのでした。
来年は『赤毛のアン』北米出版100年ということで、ここカナダでもいろんな企画があるようです。以前、プリンスエドワード島大学で英文学教授でいらしたアイリーン・ガメル先生。現在はトロントのライアソン大学にて教鞭をとられています。彼女のLooking for Anne: The Life and Times of Anne of Green Gablesと題するノン・フィクションが来年春に発刊予定だということです。アンが書かれた時代背景やモンゴメリの人生なども語られるのでしょう。来年が楽しみですねえ。

アメリカの中学高校生対象の教育雑誌READの4月13日号（Volume 56, No.16)は、モンゴメリのアン特集でした。23ページの薄手の冊子ですが、中身はアンやモンゴメリに関しての情報がぎっしりで、びっくり。私も短い文章を寄稿したのでありました。
アンはアメリカでも現在も人気ものなんですよねえ。

プリンスエドワード島大学にモンゴメリ研究機関のL.M. Montgomery Instituteが発足したのは、1993年のことでした。翌年以来、二年毎にモンゴメリ国際学会が開かれ、研究発表の場として世界中からスカラーやモンゴメリ作品ファンが集まる貴重な機会を提供してきました。
学会のみならず、研究論文を収録した書籍の発刊、CD-ROM、モンゴメリ資料公開のweb siteなどありとあらゆる活動を続け国際的にも名を広めて来たそのInstituteが、なんと、資金難から運営が危ぶまれているようです。近年、日本の高円宮妃殿下がパトロンになられたことから、これからもっと繁栄していくだろうと思っていた矢先、内情は厳しいようです。
同Instituteは、資金援助を申し出てくれる団体があることを期待しているようです。
